Manipulation of dietary conditions for maximal growth in mussels, Mytilus edulis, from the Marennes-Oléron Bay, France ArchiMer
Hawkins, Ajs; Smith, Rfm; Bougrier, Serge; Bayne, Bl; Heral, Maurice.
Results are presented from laboratory-based experiments in which we investigated short-term responses of Mytilus edulis L. to experimental changes in the amount and composition of suspended seston. Working with large quantities of cultured algae, we have studied feeding behaviour over ranges of food availability and quality that ex tend weil beyond earlier limits. Findings confirm the ability of mussels to selectively reject inorganic particles as pseudofaeces prior to ingestion, thereby enriching the organic content of ingested matter by 30% more than the organic content of natural filtered seston. Our findings also establish acclimation both of selective and absorptive processes, indicating that the extent to which growth of M. edulis can be stimulated...

Marteilia refringens and Marteilia pararefringens sp. nov. are distinct parasites of bivalves and have different European distributions ArchiMer
Kerr, R.; Ward, G. M.; Stentiford, G. D.; Alfjorden, A.; Mortensen, S.; Bignell, J. P.; Feist, S. W.; Villalba, A.; Carballal, M. J.; Cao, A.; Arzul, Isabelle; Ryder, D.; Bass, D..
Marteilia refringens causes marteiliosis in oysters, mussels and other bivalve molluscs. This parasite previously comprised two species, M. refringens and Marteilia maurini, which were synonymized in 2007 and subsequently referred to as M. refringens ‘O-type’ and ‘M-type’. O-type has caused mass mortalities of the flat oyster Ostrea edulis. We used high throughput sequencing and histology to intensively screen flat oysters and mussels (Mytilus edulis) from the UK, Sweden and Norway for infection by both types and to generate multi-gene datasets to clarify their genetic distinctiveness. Mussels from the UK, Norway and Sweden were more frequently polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-positive for M-type (75/849) than oysters (11/542). We did not detect O-type in...

Match/mismatch between the Mytilus edulis larval supply and seston quality: effect on recruitment ArchiMer
Toupoint, Nicolas; Gilmore-solomon, Lisandre; Bourque, Francois; Myrand, Bruno; Pernet, Fabrice; Olivier, Frederic; Tremblay, Rejean.
We considered Cushing's match/mismatch theory in a heterotrophic environment and hypothesized that settlement and recruitment success in blue mussel are higher when the food supply is rich in polyunsaturated and essential fatty acids (PUFA/EFA). To test this hypothesis, we monitored larval development as well as fatty acid composition in trophic resources during two successive reproductive seasons. The decoupling we found between the presence of competent larvae in the water column and settlement rates strongly suggests that metamorphosis is delayed until conditions are suitable. In both years, the major mussel settlement peak was synchronized with a phytoplanktonic pulse rich in EFA, consisting of a large autotrophic bloom in 2007 and a short but...

Besse, Thimothee; Mazurie, Joseph.

Gueguen, Marielle.
The purpose of this study is to implement models to describe detoxification kinetics of Pacific oysters Crassostrea gigas and Blue mussels Mytilus edulis containing paralytic and diarrheic phycotoxins respectively. First, experimental trials made it possible to complement data from the literature regarding the understanding of processes involved in mollusc detoxification. In particular, they pointed out a difference in the mollusc capacity to degrade cellwalls of phycotoxin-producing dinoflagellates, according to their en cystement capacities. It was observed that paralytic phycotoxins reached the various oyster tissues whereas diarrheic toxins were mainly sequestred in the digestive gland of mussels. The latter seem to be retained by lysosomes localized...

Razafimahefa, Ntsoa Rakoto.
In a context of climate change, understanding the response of species to changes in the environment and the implications for their geographic distribution is paramount. Species distribution models (SDM), through the formulation of relationships between the organism and its environment, provide a tool to explore species response to different types of environmental stresses. This study presents the development and a first application of a mechanistic and generic SDM, using a multi-agent modelling platform: NetLogo. The model allows to simulate the spatialized population dynamic of a bentho-pelagic species, in response to environmental variations. The model developed is an individual-based (IBM) mechanistic model, which incorporates a DEB (Dynamic Energy...

Monoclonal antibodies against sporangia and spores of Marteilia sp. (Protozoa: Ascetospora) ArchiMer
Robledo, Jaf; Boulo, Viviane; Mialhe, Eric; Despres, Béatrice; Figueras, Antonio.
Digestive glands of mussels Mytilus edulis from Brittany, France, infected with Marteilia sp. (Ascetospora) were used to purify the parasite. A modification of a previously used purification protocol increased purification efficiency, permitting sporangial primordia and sporangia of Marteilia sp. to be obtained. Mouse (Balb/c) monoclonal antibodies were generated against this parasite. From the fusion, 26 monoclonal antibodies against Marteilia sp. were obtained. Antibodies from 6 clones reacted only with Marteilia sp. cells and not with normal host tissues. Four of these antibodies (1/1-3, 3/1-1, 4/1-1 and 6/2-3) reacted with the sporangia wall and two with the spore cytoplasm (9/1-1 and 12/5-1). Antibodies cross-reacted with Marteilia refringens from...

Travers, Marie-agnes; Pepin, Jean-francois; Soletchnik, Patrick; Guesdon, Stephane; Le Moine, Olivier.

Mortality investigation of Mytilus edulis and Mytilus galloprovincialis in France: An experimental survey under laboratory conditions ArchiMer
Benabdelmouna, Abdellah; Garcia, Celine; Ledu, Christophe; Lamy, Pierre; Maurouard, Elise; Degremont, Lionel.
In the context of mass mortality outbreaks affecting adult and juvenile mussels since 2014 in France, two investigations were conducted to study mussel mortality under laboratory conditions in 2015. The first investigated the horizontal transmission of a putative causal agent of the mortality among two stocks of wild Mytilus edulis and the potential genetic resistance of adults and their progenies. The second evaluated the resistance of pure and hybrid crosses of M. edulis and M. galloprovincialis at the spat stage to a mortality outbreak. For the first time in France, we described several mortality outbreaks affecting spat and adult mussels under laboratory conditions. Mortality was observed for seawater temperatures ranging from 10 to 23 °C, although the...

Multixenobiotic resistance protein expression in Mytilus edulis, M-galloprovincialis and Crassostrea gigas from the French coasts ArchiMer
Minier, C; Moore, M; Galgani, Francois; Claisse, Didier.
Multixenobiotic resistance (MXR) is a membrane-transport mechanism that allows organisms to exclude many compounds from their cells and tissues. It is thus a first line of defence against a variety of toxic compounds. Since mussels and oysters possess MXR proteins, an analysis of the expression level of these membrane-transporters has been conducted in relation to their body burden of some major environmental contaminants. Mussels Mytilus edulis and M. galloprovincialis and the oyster Crassostrea gigas were sampled from a total of 43 sites along the French coasts. High expression levels were found in animals from the major French estuaries (Seine, Loire and Gironde), at a few sites in Brittany and in nearly all sites from the Mediterranean mainland coasts....

Mussel (Mytilus edulis) culture management along the Normandy coastline (France) : stock assessment and growth monitoring ArchiMer
Goulletquer, Philippe; Joly, Jean-pierre; Le Gagneur, Eric; Ruelle, Francois.
The Normandy region is presently a leading shellfish rearing area in France yielding 35,000 metric tons of oysters C. gigas and Il,000 metric tons of mussels M. edulis on a yearly basis. Preliminary studies were initiated in 1989, 1991 and 1992 to develop the sampling strategy for cultured mussel stock assessment. Comprehensive mussel stock assessment and concomitant growth monitoring were carried out in 1993 to study mussel population and optimize overall s1l1ellfish culture management. A three-stage cluster sampling strategy combined with stratification was tested on the 278 kms 'bouchot' type culture with a sampling effort of 275 units. Stratification was based upon two criteria including geographical sector and tidal level. Overall biomass was...

Novel observations underlying the fast growth of suspension-feeding shellfish in turbid environments: Mytilus edulis ArchiMer
Hawkins, Ajs; Smith, Rfm; Bayne, Bl; Heral, Maurice.
For the tirst time for any benthic filter-feeder, this study documents each component process of nutrient acquisition through natural tidal variations of food availabillty. The organic content of seston available during both neap and spring tides in the bay of Marennes-Oléron. France, decreased from 28 to 8 % with mcreasing seston concentration from 10 to about 90 mg total particulate mass 1(1). Throughout this tidal variation, the blue mussel Mylilus edulis L. cleared more water of particles as seston availability increased. Rejection of fillered material as pseudofaeces prior to ingestion remained a constant fraction of about 0 .93 x the mass of filtered material, so that ingestion rate showed no signs of stabilising at even the highest food...

Oocyte activation in Mytilus edulis by Crassostrea gigas spermatozoa ArchiMer
Mccombie, Helen; Cornette, Florence; Beaumont, Andy; Boudry, Pierre.
The development of hatchery production techniques for blue mussels is receiving increased research attention in Europe as it could offer an alternative source of spat for the industry ('Blue Seed' Project, Kamermans ICSR 2007). Among the necessary techniques are those of controlled spawning and fertilization, and techniques of triploidisation that can offer increased seasonal availability, yield and/or decreased growing time in the subsequent production stages. In several experiments, Mytilus edulis oocytes, obtained by thermally induced spawning, were fertilized with Mytilus edulis spermatozoa obtained in the same way or by stripping. Parallel treatments examined the effect of mixing Mytilus edulis oocytes with spermatozoa stripped from the Pacific...
